Welcome to the Launceston Jazz Club 

Our Club aims to present various types of jazz  to our members and the public and also to encourage and promote young jazz musicians.  Gigs are held monthly in the convivial atmosphere of the Royal Oak Hotel on the corner of Brisbane and Tamar Streets, Launceston.   Other jazz activities and events are also enjoyed by our members. 

 

 

Press Release:   “That’s Jazz”,  presented by the Launceston Jazz Club.

 

Jazz lovers from around Tasmania will not want to miss “That’s Jazz”, the Launceston Jazz Club’s first weekend jazz festival, to be held from Friday 25th till Sunday 27th June, 2010. The festival will feature 30 of Tasmania’s leading jazz musicians playing in a “mix and match” format, led by the doyen of Tasmanian jazz, Ian Pearce who will be joined by a great line-up of Hobart colleagues including Neil Levis, Kaye Payne, Viv Curtain, Terry Patterson, Christine Bailey and Rainer Gartz.  They will be joined by Bruce Haley, Don Ives and Joe Cooke from St Helens, Doug Sheehan from Devonport, Launceston’s Gourlay brothers, Max and Bruce (of Jazzmanians fame), Elvern King, Ross Challender and Steve Hill.

 Big band fans will be ably catered for by Ross Challender’s Big Band, St Joe’s Big Band and student groups from Launceston and Newstead Colleges.

 Venues will be the Royal Oak Hotel, Brisbane Street, (home of the LJC) and The Pavillion, Yorktown Square.

Registration starts at 3pm Friday at the Royal Oak, and the weekend starts swinging with a jam session featuring local and invited registered musicians, from 6pm till late.

On Saturday registration is at the Royal Oak from 10am, with programmed bands at the Royal Oak from 11am till 11pm. The Pavillion gets away to a great start with the Ross Challender Big Band at 11.30am and follows with student groups and programmed bands till 11.30pm.

St Joe’s Big Band leads off at The Pavillion at 10.30am Sunday, followed by student groups, and the grand finale will be a public concert from 1.30 till 3.30pm.

For those hardy souls who still want more, an informal evening blow at the Royal Oak will surely satisfy the most ardent jazz fans.

The Launceston Jazz Club’s 2010 inaugural That’s Jazz Festival will feature over 30 talented Tasmanian musicians, 2 big bands and students from both Launceston College and Newstead Campus playing non-stop jazz throughout the weekend at the Royal Oak Hotel and the Pav.

 

        Friday –        at the Royal Oak Hotel. Registration will commence from 3pm

                                  6pm onwards - Jam session with invited musicians

            Saturday –   Programmed Blackboard Sessions

                                  11am onwards - Royal Oak Hotel

                                  11:30am onwards - Pav - includes Ross Challender Big Band

            Sunday -      at the Pav

                                  10:30am – 11:30am - St. Joes Big Band

                                  12 noon – 1pm - Launceston College and Newstead Campus Students

                                  1:30pm – 3:30pm - Concert featuring invited Tasmanian musicians

                                  4pm onwards - Post Festival Blow

The Monthly Gig         

This is normally held on the last Tuesday of the month, however the day can vary depending on the availability of bands.  Enthusiasts can either book for dinner and background jazz at 6.30 pm or the feature band/artist at 8.00 pm.  Dinner and drinks can be ordered from the Bistro Bar.   The feature band/artist may be from Tasmania, mainland Australia or overseas. 

Seating is at small tables and it is strongly recommended that a table be booked by ringing the Royal Oak Hotel on (03) 6331 5346. 

Club members receive a 20% discount for meals at the Royal Oak Hotel at any time, not just at gigs.

 

 

Multi-instrumentalist Eric Holroyd is always a favourite visitor to the Launceston Jazz Club.

 

Eric will be MC and guest artist at the Club's 21st Birthday Celebration on the 14th March, 2009.
